The BEST 2008 has to offer...

Below is a quote that I was reminded of today. I like it. We could save ourselves a great deal of emotional energy by using this quote to determine who our friends are and what lives we will involve ourselves in.
We should be able to see the best in each other....we should have friends that see the best in us....that encourage us to be better....that make us want to be better.
2008 - new year, new chance to be the best we can be. A new opportunity to define OR re-define the relationships in our lives....to only surround ourselves with people who call forth our very best.
Our friends see the best in us,
and by that very fact
call forth the best from us.
Be brave...be willing to say "Good bye" to someone or "Hello" to another.

"I see debt people"

Had to post about Dave Ramsey. I started to listening to him on XM Satellite Radio - Channel 165 a few months ago. I have listened to many "finance" people - Suze Orman, Jean Chatzky, etc. By far, Dave Ramsey and his plan is the best. (In my humble, but most accurate opinion)

First of all, Dave has been there (has lost everything, pursued by creditors, sued, etc.) AND he treats people with empathy and compassion. He ministers just as much as he gives sound advice.

To me, his plan is simple and it makes sense. His Baby Steps give you an instant plan and priority regarding your money.

Baby Steps are as follows:

1. $1,000.00 in an "Emergency Fund" ($500 if income under 20K/yr.)
2. Pay-off all debt utilizing the "Debt Snowball" - except the house (making all future purchases with cash)
3. 3-6 months of expenses in savings
4. Invest 15% of household income into Roth IRAs and pre-tax retirement savings.
5. College funding
6. Pay-off home early
7. Build Wealth (Mutual Funds/Real Estate)

I have never approached debt quite like this and so far it is really working for me. I have always been a "budgeter", but I now feel like I understand what my goals should be.

I strongly encourage any reader to go to Dave's website and purchase some books and learn what he has to say. (Just click on his name above).

Dave's plan is not just about paying off debt - it's about living debt free. Paying cash for every single thing...car, house, etc. He has done that for the past 10 years and I feel it can be done by anyone.

Life is too short to be living paycheck to paycheck OR to be in a situation where you can't take off work to have a baby or be sick. Most people live this way.........I chose not to!

Dave's motto:

Live like no one else so that later you can live like no one else.

Sounds good to me!

Guess What?!

Nope.

Guess again.

Uh, NO!

Come on people!

Alright, I'll tell you.

I AM A HOME OWNER!!!

It was made official Friday at 1650 and I couldn't be more excited.

I can't believe it though. I just can't believe that I finally own my own home and I don't have to worry about answering to someone about what I do to it or when I leave, etc......

It's going to take me a while to wrap my brain around home ownership.

My goal is to be in MY HOUSE the 31st - my birthday. Can't think of a better gift.

Happy Birthday to me! :)

Thanks for all your prayers and encouragement through one of the most difficult processes I have ever been through.

Fought the "Big Bad Wolf" and won!

I'll post my before and after pics once the home improvements are finished.

Reality check

Had a sobering moment today watching the news. Brought me to tears quite frankly.

The story was out of Iraq. The first thing I saw was a disabled man in a wheelchair with a huge smile on his face because he was able to buy a block of ice for $2.00. That was it. Victory over a block of ice smaller than his lap.

It's 130 degrees in Iraq. In this particular city there is no electricity and no running water. What remains are children that have heat rashes and water that makes them sick.

There was one shot in the new story where a sweet five year old boy snuck a little piece of ice while his mother's back was turned. Sneaking ice....not money out of the wallet or a fist full of cookies....just frozen water.

Story just stopped me in my tracks. What do I have to complain about? What?! NOTHING. I can go buy 10 bags of ice right now, sit in my air conditioned home, lay back in a tub full of water to relax, drink water out of the tap without getting sick, turn on my lights...

I will not make a political statement on the war in Iraq and will quite frankly delete any comment posted that may be political. All I know is that there are people suffering, children who don't know what it's like to have a fun day playing in the water, running in the house for a popscicle.

Let's take it one step further. We have soldiers that are covered in gear standing in 130 degrees, separated from their families, day in and day out. All of that for you and me.

So, what were you going to complain about today? Me? Nothing now. I plan on giving thanks and praying for those sweet babies in Iraq and our dear soldiers.

Deadliest Catch Chick...

Anyone watch Deadliest Catch on the Discovery channel? I love that show for some reason. Here is what I seriously wonder..... I wonder if I could do that job for one day. ??? I would love to try. I think it would scare to stuffing out of me, but I love the idea of pushing myself past all perceived limits and see how far I get.

They don't let you try that job out for a day, I know, but I sure would like to try it! Anyone feel the same?

Happy Glazes are here again!

I'm excited! I enrolled in my pottery class after taking a break for a while and I can't wait for it to start.

There is something about working with clay.....anyone who has done it will tell you. For me, it's stress relieving, therapuetic, something that brings me great joy.......I knew the first time I "played with clay" that it would change my life.

It's definitely one of my passions. Everyone should have a passion....an outlet. You don't have to be great at something. No one else has to understand. Just follow your bliss.

Assuming I get to move into my new home, I want to tear down the shed in my backyard and remove the garage storage room. In place of all of that I would like to get a large storage building that has a loft and windows to do all my art stuff in. It will happen one day - what a great day that will be. (Of course, I'll probably buy the storage shed at Lowe's!)

I'll post pics of my creations from this new class once I have something to show. Class starts August 27th.

Lowe's vs. Home Depot

Everyone's got a favorite, right? Today I heard someone talking about how wonderful Home Depot was and I just had to set the record straight!

Let's get right to the heart of the matter..........I vote for LOWE'S!

First, let's just talk colors......ORANGE? Really! Not a real classy color in my opinion - makes me want to hurt myself.. Blue - soothing AND classy. (It's a chick thing, guys)

Moving on to points with more substance. Know what happens when I go to Home Depot?

I walk in and yell, "Yoooo Hoooo"..."Helllllloooooooo"..."Anyone home?"...uh-umm,
"Could I get some help over here anytime this century?"

Eventually I find someone - they are usually very grumpy and put out that they have to help me. Why? I think I'm nice, patient, usually have a legitimate need AND money. It doesn't matter though.......they're scary mean - like they would rather be having chemo. (I think it's because they have to wear an orange smock, but then that's just my opinion)

I usually leave Home Depot feeling like a stupid female and that makes me grumpy.

However, Lowe's is a different situation. It's crawling with help and I've never gotten help from anyone who wasn't kind and patient with me. Why write a blog about it? Don't know really....I guess it's because I've lived at Lowe's the last few months. I've been there so much I'm almost embarassed. I worry that the staff at Lowe's is going to sigh and say "Her AGAIN?!" the next time they see me walking down the aisle. Hasn't happened yet though.

So, go to Lowe's. Tell Home Depot to stuff it. Best Lowe's location? (And trust me, I've been to all of them) McAlester Lowe's........great, kind people. A few, I wish were my friends as psychotic as that sounds. (I know, I need to get out more often)

Thank you Lowe's for making my first home buying/improvement project (which has been a NIGHTMARE) tolerable.

IF I get into my house, I will post before and after pics of my house. Everything you will see is from Lowe's.

I think they should hire me in marketing, what do you think? I'd wear a blue smock anyday!

The Woman Who Knew Too Much!

For once in my life I heard those words..."You just know too much...." Should have been music to my ears, but it wasn't.

I had the pleasure to go to the Antique Roadshow this weekend in San Antonio, TX. It was such a fun experience, but overwhelming as well.

I was pleasantly surprised with how well organized the event was and how kind everyone associated with the Roadshow was - that includes the appraisers. By the end of the day, they estimate that 5,000 people will have been through and that the appraisers will have appraised at least 10,000 items. Given that, organization is a must. We arrived in line at 1100 and were leaving at 1345 - impressive.

I brought my Wilson "Snowflake" Bentley collection and was thrilled to have it appraised by Wes Cowan, my favorite appraiser of the Roadshow and History Detectives. He is an enthusiastic and kind man.

He was very excited about my collection and asked me numerous questions regarding the collection and my interest in Wilson Bentley. Then he asked me, "How would you like to be on TV with your collection?" I told him that would be just fine......he then put me backstage to wait for a producer.

30 minutes later a producer came with Mr. Cowan. They took my collection and met together. The producer then interviewed me...."How did you acquire this collection?" "What is your interest in Mr. Bentley?", etc. After interviewing me she met with Mr. Cowan again and then they both came to me.....the producer passed on putting the collection on TV and Mr. Cowan explained why and then finished my appraisal.

In a nutshell, I knew too much about the collection. There wasn't anything that the appraiser could have told me that I didn't know. The producer wanted the surprise factor - the girl that purchased a collection for $500.00 and knew nothing about it. That isn't me and I'm not ashamed of that. I can truthfully say that I wasn't disappointed that I wasn't on TV....I was disappointed that an opportunity to tell people about Wilson Bentley didn't work out.

Despite my disappointment, I was glad that Mr. Cowan was excited about my collection and saw in it what I do.

I guess I will use this forum to tell people about Bentley.

If you get a chance to go the Roadshow, take it. It was great. My only regret is that I should have taken more of it in - slowed down and looked around and soaked it all up. Not sure I could of though as it was crowded and fast paced once I met up with Mr. Cowan.

Bad Dog!

My sweet girl has been very bad lately and I'm at a loss as to what to do. Starting to believe that there is nothing I can do.
In a span of a week, Bentley caught and killed 9 animals....3 rabbits, 2 squirrels, 3 birds and 1 rat. It's not enough that she catches them and kills them....she has to run around with them and chew on them as if they are a stuffed play toy with a squeeker.
I might add that she caught 2 of those animals while being tied up.
One thing I have noticed about Bentley is that she is quite smart and very fast. I believe she is just doing what comes naturally. The problem is that it's NOT natural for me to get dead animals away from her or off the ground. Can't do it............won't do it!
Any suggestions? Please let me know!

Will update you on the house situation just as soon as I have the emotional fortitude to do so!

Good News and Bad News

Which one do you want first?

Alright.

Good News........Next month I will be closing on a house!!! I will finally be a home owner and I am really excited. So, now I can mark that off my things to do list! I will be moving to Weleetka. Yee Haw! Never heard of it? That's okay. You aren't alone. It's a teeny tiny town. At heart, I am a country girl. I like living in a town that rolls up the street at 8PM. So this will be great for me.

I will be more centrally located for my job and that will be a blessing. This whole house things is a blessing all the way around. I cannot be more thankful! I will post pics when I get some that I like. More than likely I will do the before and after.

I am in the process of picking out paint, hardwood, carpet, tile and it's exciting and fun. So, lots of changes coming real soon.

Bad News..........MRI showed that I have a herniated disc at L4-5 and that I have some degenerative disc disease. I am going to take a very conservative approach and not go the surgery route unless I just have to. In the meantime, I will be careful. Those of you who know me are saying, "Yeah, right." Really, I will be good. Safety first! :)

I have decided to hire a moving company to move me completely. Might cost a mint, but it is worth the peace of mind and saving my back and the time and effort of family and friends.

I have been a little lazy lately with the blogging. Just have been so busy. I will be posting some new things by the weekend. So, check back.

Until then, take care and remember.........safety first! :)

Odds and Ends

Hello, my friends:

Sitting here in bed, eating popcorn, watching Columbo......is there anything better? I don't think so.

What Columbo episode, you ask? Murder, Smoke and Shadows. It's from the 80's. I prefer the ones from the 70's for a lot of different reasons.....bottom line, the 70's are groovy.

Don't have really anything specific to talk about.....just feeling talkative (I know that comes as quite a shock to some of you).

So, get comfy and enjoy the read.

First of all, popcorn......perfect snack. I love it, although probably not as much as my dad does. He might need to seek help for his popcorn addiction. Seen the latest Orvelle Redenbacher commercial where they have him losing his temper and cursing? Bothers me. He seemed like such a nice, calm man.

- My spy sweeper just notified me that I have 33 spyware things on my computer....that can't be good. -

Back to Orvelle. Why pimp Orvelle's original commercial? It's just wrong. What's next, Mr. Rogers doing a strip tease while exchanging sweaters? Not creative enough to come up with your own stuff? Funny how it bothers me....I know, it's just a commercial.

I cannot breathe and it's driving me nuts....sinuses. Tis the season, I guess.

My mom told me that she heard on the news that Archaeologist found King Herod's tomb. Not much about it on Google, but they are supposed to have a press conference about it tomorrow. How interesting!

I have an exciting day tomorrow....at least the afternoon is exciting. If all goes well, I will get to check one of those Things to do in 2007 items off my list. I'll remain quiet on the subject for now.

In the morning I have an MRI scheduled for my back injury of last month. I hope it goes well. It's at 0700....Yea, that's what I want to do at that hour. Got to do it though...still have a numb right thigh and other problems I just won't mention.

I just realized that this has to be the most boring blog ever. Sorry, just feel like talking.

Better go if I'm going to get up by 0600 to do time in the tube.

Have a good one.

Debunking Sweet Home Alabama

I'm sure most of you have seen the movie, Sweet Home Alabama. I have and enjoyed it. However, something about that movie is soooo wrong and it bothers me every time I see it.

So, to all the Geologist out there, I've got your back on this one!

Remember the beautiful glass pieces that were pulled out of the sand after lightning struck the sand in a thunderstorm? They were great weren't they? Bet you looked for one on ebay after the movie.

You did, didn't you?

Come on.....you can tell me.

Well, guess what, you can find one on ebay! Only catch is that it's not quite going to look like it did in the movie. (Imagine that)

It's going to look something like these.

Disappointed? Don't be....this is the real deal and there is nothing better than that, right? To think that these are formed by a split second moment in time....it's amazing. They are rare treasures waiting to be found in the sand.

So, what are they? They are called Fulgurites. First, I will tell you what they are like and then I will explain how they are formed.

They are hollow, as you will see in the picture below, they are extremely light weight, they have a rough texture on the outside. Some of them have a smooth, glass like appearance and texture on the inside. When you hit them together, they have a high pitched tone.....they sound like glass clanking together or wind chimes. I think they are great and I like to think of them as lightning fossils.

Here is how they are formed. Fulgurite is the varietal name given to fused Quartz, SiO2, which has been fused by the action of lightning striking the Earth and locally melting the sand. Some of the best Fulgurite specimens are found in Quartz sand, where the Fulgurite takes the form of a tube or tubes. The best known Fulgurite was found in Florida. It consisted of three branches totalling 38 feet! Wouldn't that have been fun to find?! There are Sand Fulgurites and Rock Fulgurites.
_____________________________________________________________
Let me break it down for you!
Sand Fulgurite...as lightning strikes the Earth and courses downward through the sand, the sand is instantly super heated and therefore melts or fuses together. After the sand cools, glass-like hollow tubes can sometimes be found beneath the sand. Sometimes branching as they descend and sometimes extending several feet - usually decreasing in diameter.
_____________________________________________________________
Rock Fulgurite...they are formed when lighting strikes the surface of a rock, melting and fusing the surface, and sometimes the interior of the rock.
____________________________________________________________
Here is something interesting about the origin of the name Fulgurite....
In Europe, during the Medivial times a ringing church bell was thought to protect the local village from a certain type of weather. Because of this belief, it was common for church bells to be inscribed with the words "Fulgura frango", meaning " I break the lightning". A lovely thought.....church bells protecting a village from lightning, but in one 33 year span, more than 100 bell-ringers lost their lives disproving that theory. Needless to say, the inscriptions disappeared pretty quickly; but, the Latin word for lightning "fulgurate" survived and became the root of the English word fulgarite meaning lightning fused sand.
_____________________________________________________________
So, the next time you are at the beach, start your treasure hunt. You might be able to find a little piece of sand that captured a moment in time. Neat thought.
_____________________________________________________________
I think they are sculptures of nature - God being the artist, of course. That beats Hollywood any day of the week in my book!

Kent State and the Ohio National Guard

I received a comment regarding the Kent State Shootings that I would like to draw attention to.

"M" wrote the following:

While it is certainly true and tragic that four students were killed and nine others injured, no one ever seems to consider the impact that this incident had on the lives of the Guardsmen there that day.
Someone very close to me was one of them. Here are a few relevant facts that no one seems to either be aware of or address:
1. These Guardsmen were, for the most part, young. Very young. Most of them the same age as these students.
2. They were not fully trained soldiers. This was time of war when training was for "real soldiers".
3. There was rioting in the streets of Kent happening at the time. From what I have been told by my Mother, who was there, (so was I as a baby) when she and my Grandmother were travelling through town via car, they were in fear for their lives. There was much destruction. The car was almost overturned with all three of us in it.
4. The Guard Unit that my relative was in had spent much of the previous week camped out alongside the highway in an attempt to curb violence resulting from a Teamsters strike. There were death threats that had been made against the non-union drivers. This is why these units were armed as they were.
5. The climate at the University at that time was being, at a minimun affected, if not controlled, by subversive and violent groups who had been on Campus for some time prior to May 4th. Groups that were infamous for their dissention and violence. They had created a firestorm of emotion in an otherwise peaceful community. Deliberately. As these letters so chillingly seem to point out.
6. The Guardsmen were under attack. They weren't monsters who came with the intention to cut down some "hippie protesters". They were in fear for their own lives as well. No one knew if there were firearms in the crowd of students or not. They were told to "expect anything".
In retrospect, I think that it should be considered that there were other factors certainly at play on May 4th. These Guardsmen were not some bloodthirsty killing machine turned loose to murder innocent students.
They were young, ill-equipped to handle such a volatile situation, frightened and completely ignorant of what to expect. Most of them were also natives of this area and had never seen anything like what was happening that week.
If our Government had a hand in this plot (which seems very likely) I am completely convinced that these young men were only pawns.None of them died that day, but they were adversely affected as well.
There was much emotional trauma on their end too. This was just a tragic situation all the way around. Their lives were changed forever as well. I can personally see that whenever this subject comes up in my family. My relative is a good and decent man who would never calculate and deliver violence willingly to another human being and to have been put in a situation where he had to be involved in something so alien to him with the outcome so horrible and far-reaching has impacted him forever.
I am sure that this doesn't compare with the despair of these families at the loss of a loved one. I would never be so callous to even hold the two up side by side. I only hope that someday all of this can come out in the open and that people will see that these young men were not evil. They didn't go there that day with intentions of destruction. They have been painted as something that they were not.
I can't shed any light on the thoughts and intentions of their supervisors, but I can say that these young men were ignorant of any longer-reaching, sinister undercurrent.
Respectfully,
M
M,
Thank you so much for taking the time to leave such a thoughtful comment. You gave me a lot to think about and I would first like to say that I am so sorry for the trauma your relative has gone through.
You know, to be honest, I never thought much about the Guardsmen or what they went through. You helped me do that today and I appreciate it.
I have tried to be careful to give any opinion regarding May 4th because I wasn't there and I wasn't born until 1971; therefore, I certainly don't have an idea what the climate of the times must have been like. I do recognize that May 4th and the events leading up to it must have been shocking, frightening and something that escalated to a point that no one expected or was prepared to deal with.
I don't think the Guardsmen were evil, blood thirsty individuals who were hell bent on killing. You helped me understand that more than likely they were young men who were scared, ill prepared and probably given commands that were not appropriate.
I have no doubt their experience on May 4th is close to the surface and something that doesn't escape their thoughts often. I have compassion for them and hope that they have been able to find personal peace regarding their involvement on that day.
I am surprised at how passionate people still feel about this subject. I never expected to hear from people regarding this. Maybe I have because there is a lack of healing. Maybe everyone was and is too busy blaming and accusing rather than communicating and treating others with compassion and understanding.
Is there any difference between a student standing up for their convictions and a Guardsmen of the same age standing strong in the face of chaos out of a strong sense of conviction and duty?
My best to the families and individuals involved in the tragic events of May 4th. To the Guardsmen who are tortured about what they were asked to do and to the students who felt needlessly attacked. I think the true culprits are the people who weren't seen that day - the ones who gave orders, made decisions based upon politics and escaped consequences for their actions.
Thank you M. I wish you and your family the very best.

Kent State Shootings and Steven Sharoff

In April, I posted some information regarding the Kent State Shootings. For the privacy of certain individuals, I used only their initials in my postings.

Much to my surprise, I have been able to communicate with one of those individuals. Steven Sharoff. He has read Mr. Knopf's letters regarding himself and has sent me an email response regarding those letters. He has given me permission to post his response and I am quite grateful to him for his time and communication.

I will let you come to your own conclusions, but I believe Mr. Sharoff. He has been quite gracious and I hope you find his response enlightening.

I have read Prof. Knopf's material and am, frankly, astounded. It is filled with suppositions and inaccuracies. I never hid nor disappeared. My movements can be traced very accurately. I left KSU because my thesis topic on the May 4 incident was not approved by a split history department and for no other reason. (My advisor can prove that.) I did indeed finish many courses at KSU and have the transcripts to prove it (and several advanced degrees I might add!).
I never worked for the FBI or any other govt agency, unless you count being a probation officer in my tiny county in NY for a year or so before going back to grad school where I spent the next 3 years.
The truth is so simple that people like Dr. Knof are unable to believe it: I wandered into the middle of a situation and became heavily involved in it. (JG and TB were both great guys and didn't follow me. In fact it was one of their ideas to bury (not burn) the constitution.) You can call it destiny or fate or whatever. None of it was planned. I saw what I considered to be a miscarriage of justice when the U attempted to kick SDS off campus and I became, by accident I can assure you, the leader of CCC. I was never very radical nor, at the same time, was I very pleased with what was going on in Vietnam to put it mildly.
As far as the assistantship is concerned, Dr. Knof was right; it was unusual. That was due to Dr. Lou Harris, the Provost. My relationship with Dr. Harris was very interesting and began with an invitation and visit to his home. Basically he wanted to know how I became involved in all of what I was involved in. I had absolutely nothing to hide and so told him and he believed me. (Dr. Harold Kitner was also at that meeting.) When the next day it was reported by the VP of student affairs that I was seen at a regional SDS meeting the night before, the same night I spent the evening at Dr. Harris, I realized just what kind of people I was dealing with. I have alwasy thought very highly of Dr. Harris and believe to this day that has his council been sought, the incident at KSU may never have happened.
Last, if I was an "agent" do you think that I would have gone before the govt panel on KSU or let myself be interviewed by James Mitchner or appeared in the Time-Life series? I'm surprised that Dr. Knof, as a historian, didn't do better. (I did in fact spend 5 years in Europe working for the U of Maryland who had a contact with the military. So the tidbit about my being on a base in Germany for a brief time is probably true.)
There is lots more and I'd be happy to have a conversation with you and/or the other correspondents.
Sincerely,Steven Sharoff
Thank you and Best Wishes, Mr. Sharoff.

When you visit, fireworks always go off!

The title of this blog has nothing to do with what I am going to talk about.

It's what a friend said to me last night. I just had to repeat it.....what chick doesn't want to hear that?!

Makes my day.......love it! Thank you, kind sir.

Okay, let's talk Super Suppers AGAIN.

First of all, everything that I have cooked so far has been wonderful. I hurt myself on the Shrimp Scampi.....had to take a walk I was so miserable! (Good miserable)

Today, I made the following things:

Skillet Goulash - TON of food
Bruschetta Chicken Bake (I'm going to love this one)
Shrimp Divan
Pepperoni Braided Bread - had that tonight...I had to share - It could easily feed three people and I have another one in the freezer.

6 total entrees (made 2 of Goulash and Chicken Bake) Remember, there are about 6 servings per entree. That's a lot of grub!

Grand Total? $107.00. NO WAY I could do that at the grocery store. No way I would want to cook all of that. No way I would want to clean up the kitchen after cooking.

I'm in heaven!!!!!!!!!!! I want to have a private party and invite my girlfriends. Girlfriends, if you are reading this.........get ready to PARTAY!!!!!

This idea was brilliance! By the way, it's just fun, fun, fun at Super Suppers. The owner is nice and the workers so helpful. There is no down side, people! Quite frankly, if you don't try it, I'm going to question your level of intelligence!

Did I mention that when I visit, fireworks go off?

Well, ExcuuUUUUuuuuse me!

WOW! Vidalia Onion lovers unite!

I have been set straight......

"You can freeze them." (Or not)
"They are so sweet you will want to eat them like an apple" (uh, no...)
"Once you learn how good they are, you will put them in everything you cook" (I'm on strike, remember?)
"It's the Shriners and they are wonderful" (Yes, BUT they wear funny hats with tassles and sell onions)
"You can buy a bag and split it" (I like my friends)

On and on and on. I was even offered a zip lock bag full of them.

I get it. I asked and you answered. I understand - might not be running out to buy a bag but I get it. Vidalia onions have a place in this world.

Okay, now that I have been corrected, just simmer down.....relax - eat an onion.

One question though.....Just curious as to how many boxes of Girl Scout cookies you bought this year? Bet it was more than bags of onions! Of course, you probably loaded up on thin mints just waiting for the spring! Ever thought about getting some help?

By the way, you would think my blog was about politics, global warming or putting an end to world hunger. Heaven help me if I start talking about that!

Funny Hats vs. The Troops

Got home from work at 2300 and I am worn out. Few hours I will be up to do it all over in the morning. Again, I will just refrain from comment about my job. Not good to make comments when one is tired.

I had a few things to post, but will tomorrow.

One question...Why do people buy a whole big bag of Vidalia Onions? I mean what do you do with a whole big bag? I just don't get it. There were people selling them all over the place on my trip to SE Oklahoma today. Never in my life would I need a gigantic bag of onions.

Someone enlighten me, please. I assume you can't freeze onions, can you? Heaven help you if you fry them all and eat them.

Here is the real amazing thing.....some organizations wait all year to sell onions and that money helps fund their group for certain projects the rest of the year. Can't remember what organization, but I'm sure they have a funny hat with a tassle.

Anyway, doesn't that seem a bit risky? Counting on onion sales to make your money and keep your organizations a float? I can just hear the meeting now...."I would like to make a motion that we buy new furniture for the meeting hall.".......discussion ensues about where they will get the money.......

$$$$talk$$$$........

"We should sell onions in the spring"

"What a brilliant idea - all in favor?"

I bet there aren't any women in that group wearing funny hats.

Now, let's compare the onion sellers in funny hats to another group - the troops.

The GIRLscouts to be exact.....they sell COOKIES to fund their entire year of activities. Imagine that?! Who doesn't want a box of cookies? (Who wants a bag of onions?)

Hmmmmm.....let's think about this. You've got a Ford on your left, tailgate down, guy in funny hat in lawn chair, ONIONS in the back of the truck. Then on you're right, you've got the troops holding up colorful signs covered in glitter that say "COOKIES for sale". Left or right?

Onions....Cookies?

Onions....Cookies?

If you say left and buy the bag of onions, just do me and everyone else a favor.....Go right and buy a box of Thin Mints. You are going to need them.

Going to sleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeep to dream of cookies.

Georgie had this to say...

I'm supposed to be working this weekend, but I thought I would do this before I head to the nursing home. I would love to play hookie, but I can't.

Here is the eyewitness account of George Hagopian: I believe the dude!

My grandfather was the minister of the big Armenian Orthodox Church in Van (near Lake Van), and he always told me stories about the holy ship on the mountain.
And then one day my uncle said, "Georgie, I'm going to take you to see the Holy Ark." We packed supplies on his donkey, and together we started our trek toward Mount Ararat.
My feet were getting sore, and the donkey kept wanting to go in the wrong direction, but we continued climbing until we got about halfway up. Then Uncle took both supplies and me on his back, and we climbed and climbed.
It took us almost eight days from the time we left Van to the moment we got to the place on the holy mountain where both my grandfather and my uncle had said the holy ship had come to rest.
I guess my uncle took me there that year because it was a year without much snow - a "smooth year" or "no snow year" we called it.
There's one of those about every twenty years.
And then we got to the Ark. It was getting dark and misty around us. My uncle dropped his pack, and together we began to haul stones to the side of the ship. Within a short time we had stacked a high pile of rocks against the side of the ship.
"Georgie, come here" he said, grabbing me by the arm. "You are going on top of the Holy Ark." He lifted me up and put me on his shoulders, and together we climbed the pile of rocks. When he had reached the top of the rocks, his hands grabbed my ankles and he began to push me up toward the stairs that someone had added to the ark.
"Reach for the top, Georgie," he yelled. "Grab the edge and pull yourself up!"
I stood up straight and looked all oved the ship. It was long. The height was about forty feet.
"Look inside the Ark," my uncle called up to me. "Look for the holes. Look for the big one. Look inside and tell me what you see."
I shivered from the cold and from fear and glanced around me. Yes, there was the hole, big and gaping. I peeked into the blackness of the hole, but saw nothing. Then I knelt down and kissed the holy Ark.
When we were there, the top of the Ark was covered with a very thing coat of fresh fallen snow. But when I brushed some of it away I could see a green moss growing right on top. When I pulled a piece off....it was made of wood. The grain was right there. This green moss made the Ark feel soft and moldy.
On the roof, besides one large hole, I remember small holes running all the way from the front to the back. I don't know exactly how many, but there must have been at least fifty of them running down the middle with small intervals in between. My uncle told me these holes were for air.
That roof was flat with the exception of the narrow raised section running all the way from the bow to the stern with all those holes in it.
I remember, my uncle too his gun and shot into the side of the Ark, but the bullet wouldn't penetrate. Uncle then pulled his long hunting knife from his belt, and with a heavy handle he chipped a piece from the side of the Ark. Then we went down the mountainside and returned to Van.

George made this trip in sometime between 1900-1906. He took a photographer back to Turkey in 1922 to photograph the Ark, but due to fighting between the Turks, Greeks and Armenians, he was not allowed to travel to Eastern Turkey.
______________________________________________________________
In the book, you will read professional critique's of George's stories and of his extensive intereviews before his death. The result was that Hagopian's story was difficult to falsify. The weather, his description of the area, length of time it took to travel to the Ark, etc....all facts that were verifiable.
_____________________________________________________________
It is also known during that time period....drought and no snow, there were many that claimed to travel to see the Ark.
______________________________________________________________
George made another trek to see the Ark sometime during 1902-1908, when he was 12. He relays the following about that visit:
_______________________________________________________________
I saw the Ark a second time. I think it was in 1904. We were on the mountain looking for the holy flowers, and I went back to the Ark and it still looked the same. Nothing had changed. I didn't really get a good look at it. It was resting on a steep ledge of bluish-green rock about 3,000 feet wide.
Another thing I noticed was that I didn't see any nails at all. It seemed that the whole ship was made of one piece of petrified wood.
There was definately no door in the side of the ship that I could see. No opening of any kind. There may have been one in the part I couldn't see, but that I don't know. That side was practically inaccessible. I could only see my side and part of the bow.
The sides were slanting outward to the top and the front was flat. I didn't see any real curves. It was unlike any other boat I have ever seen. It looked more like a flat-bottomed barge.

The above excerpts were taken from the book, The Explorers of Ararat. By: B.J. Corbin.
One thing I will mention about the book. It's not a subjective book of fantasy...with the agenda to make you believe. Different chapters are written by different experts and explorers and they disagree as to where the ark is, if it can be found, etc. The book contains history of documented Ark Expeditions and well as sightings. I believe it to be non-biased and a read well worth your time if you are interested.

Well, I'm off to work............boo hiss. I won't even get started about work, but boy wouldn't I like to!

2 by 2...

Did you all see this in the news today about Noah's Ark? What a neat thing to go see. It's huge and then to realize that it is still not the size of the real Noah's Ark....hard to wrap your brain around that.

If you are interested in Noah's Ark and the search for the ark, you should really read the book, The Explorers of Ararat. I found that book to be quite informative and most interesting!

What captured my imagination are the stories of Ed Davis and his experience in WWII and George Hagopian. George's story captivated me most and still does. I still pull out that book and read his story. I don't have a good link to read his eyewitness account....maybe one day soon I will post it - it's worth the read!!!

I don't believe that Noah's Ark was discovered in 2006 as it was claimed and I shared a few emails with Rex Gessler of noahsarksearch.com on the subject as he did not feel those claims were true as well. You can read articles as to why the discovery in 2006 was probably not the ark on Mr. Gessler's website. (See: Check This Out - link section)

I think we will know without any doubt when the ark is found. I don't feel it will just be a hunk of petrified wood within a glacier or mountain side. I think we will know just by looking. I don't think the ark will be intact or perfectly preserved, but I believe it will be more than a hunk of wood. Funny fact, the Bible says that Noah's Ark was made of "Gopher wood" - guess what? we don't know what that is! :)

This subject captures me....always has, even when I was a little girl. I remember being about 13 or so and my mom telling me about people who thought they had found the ark....I was hungry to find a book about it - I finally did, just 20+ years later.

Without sounding like a conspiracy theorist....I sincerely believe that our government has photographic evidence (at least that - maybe more) of the ark's existence in the mountains of Ararat. I think it's either "Top Secret" or more likely, something that has been forgotten or can't be located.

Read the book.....you'll see accounts of those who asked the government about evidence. In addition, you will also read about other entities that may have "something" related to the ark, such as, the Smithsonian Institute.

I know, now I sound all cracked up. Deal with it!
